About the Artist
“Music underlies all of my visual work, and you will see elements of harmony, discord, syncopation and rhythm in any of my sculptures.
One series of wall sculptures are riffs on jazz improvisation. Aluminum compositions serve as the underlying chord structure, while painterly surfaces are the notes played over these chordal changes. References are made to the city, to our insatiable appetites for signage, and to narrative icons. Other wall sculptures are remembrances of autobiographical events. They summarize a particular life experience, also addressing the passage of time and its effect on memory.
Often, memory decays, and the surfaces of the pieces reflect this ongoing entropy in the preservation of a lingering souvenir. My rusted sculptures hold the notes of profound musical experiences, often with somber undertones.” — Richard Taylor
