About the Artist
"The stroke which marks the path of a rocket into the sky may be only a few inches long, but the spirit of the artist has traveled a thousand feet at the moment he made that stroke." — Chiura Obata, master sumi-é artist
“Sumi-é is not only a very distinctive, almost martial art, painting technique. It's also a Zen meditation, manifest in a painting. The subjects most usually deal with Nature. The simple plant we pass by so many times every day, when focused upon becomes intricate and fascinating. The old masters of sumi-é advised to ‘paint the bamboo for ten years, become the bamboo, then paint again.’ This is the Zen of sumi-é. All my work is infused with sumi-é technique.” — Shawn Wilson
