About the Artist
James Havard is an American painter and sculptor who first gained artistic renown as a prominent member of the abstract illusionist movement of the 1970s with Frank Stella.
This aesthetic focused primarily on shading, creating drop shadows around expressive abstract forms and brushstrokes in such a way that gives the illusion of three-dimensionality (or “trompe l’oeil” effect) paired with strong lines and edges.
In the 1980s, Havard became profoundly influenced by the aesthetics of indigenous and native tribal artists, changing his style became more figurative with roughly drawn lines and shapes. The resulting body of work is raw and evocative that captures deep human emotion.
