About the Artist
“Composed of intertwined and scattered shapes in striking formations, my newest abstract paintings reflect my concern about the deep divides in our country.
At this time when hostility and distrust reigns, I share my own visual interpretations of living during this fractious time as well as the not-too-distant past when we shared common values of civility and decency – a time when we used negotiation and compromise to fuel the engine of our democracy.
More broadly, these paintings serve as a reminder of our shared aspirations and emphasize the once collaborative and productive capacity of our democracy.
I start with a carefully composed small ink sketch of bold integrated shapes. Using the sketch much as a map, I then build the composition on the canvas, first blocking out the shapes with acrylic paint in simple dark and light forms. From there, I apply layers of paint creating areas of nuanced color and visual intrigue. Mid-way through the process, I add collage and textural points-of-interest: bits of painted, printed or corrugated papers. At intervals, I apply velvety charcoal lines, leaving some well-defined and smudging others. These lines thread throughout each piece enhancing detail, emphasizing the structure and unifying the work as a whole.”
