About the Artist
Highly regarded for his skill as a draughtsman and painter, John Dawson's works are exclusively figurative. He often explores the dark side of the human psyche, resulting in personal, perceptive and psychological paintings that at times shock and overwhelm the viewer. He has exhibited from coast to coast, having had one man exhibitions in both New York and San Francisco, as well as numerous exhibitions in between.
His works are in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, El Paso Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, Ulrich Museum of Art, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, and the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, among others. It has also been extensively reviewed in numerous publications, including ArtNews, Artweek, Southwest Art, and Art Voices South. He was selected for the book World Artists 1980-1990, edited by Claude Marks. His work is the focus of a recently published book, John Dawson: Thirty Years.
