Michael Kessler
About the Artist
Michael Kessler's paintings are known for their elaborate topography consisting of multi-layered veneers of acrylic combined with curvilinear elements and submerged sensual shapes. His source of inspiration originates from years spent on the family farm in rural Pennsylvania. Discarded farm implements, tree bark, filtered sunlight and pond water all merge to inform his bold compositions. The Santa Fe based artist now finds his inspiration in the vast landscapes of New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. Kessler lavishes his panels with as many as 50 micro-thin layers of translucent and transparent acrylic. Suspended within the layers, biomorphic tendrils branch about, while arcs of line and color slip over and under matrices, balancing nature’s curves with the mindfulness of structure.
“Nature provides the basis upon which my work exists. Thirty-five years ago I began painting landscapes, but through prolonged and careful observation it was the innerdynamics of the natural world that grasped my attention.”
